AMSTERDAM: Ajax and Lyon played a 0-0 draw Wednesday in the opening group match of the Champions League.

Both sides wasted several chances while good goalkeeping from Ajax’s Kenneth Vermeer and Lyon’s Hugo Lloris kept strikers at bay.

Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen was in sparkling form. He came close to breaking the deadlock in the 67th when he fired a thumping shot from 20 yards but Lloris made a diving save.

Ajax made an aggressive start, enjoying better possession but failing to create effective chances.

Lyon had its own chances with lanky forward Bafetimbi Gomis hitting a close range strike, which Vermeer intercepted in the 23rd.

Both sides have one point each in Group D, two behind Real Madrid, which beat Dynamo Zagreb 1-0.

“We need to go there and win,” Ajax captain Jan Vertongen told NOS.

“This set of players know just what to do in situations like this.”

Both sides have plenty of work to do before their next Champions League
meetings with Ajax traveling to Real while Lyon hosts Dynamo Zagreb.
