AMSTERDAM– Host Panama beat Greece 8-3 in the opening match of the 2011 Baseball World Cup Saturday.

Sixteen teams, including a Dutch side, are taking part. The teams are divided into two pools.

The Netherlands thumped Chinese Taipei 2-1 Sunday while Canada dispatched Puerto Rico 9-1.

The Netherlands qualified during the 2010 European Championship in Germany. In the 2005 and 2007 meets, the Dutch team snatched a reasonable fourth place.

Hosting the event is expected to usher new opportunities for Panama, International Baseball Federation President Riccardo Fraccari said.

“It will leave behind a number of top quality facilities that will allow the country to become the natural venue for a number of big baseball events in the future,” he said.

For the first time in tournament history, more than 50 matches, can be followed live online.

The 2011 Baseball World Cup runs until Oct. 15.

In other matches, top-ranked Cuba blanked Australia 14-0 while Dominican Republic demolished Italy 7-0.

The Netherlands is due to play Greece while Japan meets Canada Monday.
